A vote was held on which cover they would include in this session, the result was revealed on Lamacq Live, January 17, 2000. The band then had three days to learn the song before performing it for the Evening Session on January 20th/21st (the session lasted two days).

The tracks from this session were released over four consecutive nights on Radio 1: February 7th, 8th, 9th 10th, 2000.

On the 2nd night of the broadcast Steve Lamacq references how it is "6 years to the day" since the infamous Netherlands ferry incident. (Which would date that as having happened on February 8, 1994 - but the tour posters show that gig as taking place on February 18, 1994)

Noel said at the time:
"It will be a pleasure to take the band into the studio for the very first time to perform some old ones, some new ones and one cover version of your choice. PS Please don’t pick any Beatles songs as George (Harrison) probably won’t be able to take the excitement!"

The shortlist was:
  • The Who - "My Generation"
  • Blur - "Country House"
  • Rolling Stones - "Sympathy For The Devil"
  • Nirvana - "Come As You Are"
  • Robbie Williams - "Angels"
The winner was "My Generation" and the band continued to play it for the next 6 years!

Production info compiled by @mahsteve on the Live4Ever forum:
Produced by the band
Engineered by Paul ‘Strangeboy’ Stacey and Simon Askew
Protools engineer Jan ‘Stan’ Kybert assisted by David Treahearn
Mixed by Mark ‘Spike’ Stent
Keyboards Mike Rowe
Additional backing vocals and backwards guitars on My Generation Paul ‘Strangeboy’ Stacey

Simon Askew was the BBC Maida Vale session producer

David Treahearn began his music career at Olympic Studios in London in January 2000, where he worked until 2007 as an assistant engineer to international Producer/Mixer Mark 'Spike' Stent.

The cover of the The Who’s My Generation from this session was eventually released in 2002 as a b side on the Little by Little/She Is Love double A side single

Noel and Gem had appeared on Lamacq Live, BBC Radio 1, a few days previously on 17th January and as part of a fan competition had to pick a cover to perform in the session they would record a few days later. The choices were: Robbie Williams - Angels, The Who - My Generation, Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the devil and Nirvana - Come as you are. No Beatles songs were allowed. Noel “picked at random” My Generation, which was lucky as the band had been rehearsing it all week!
