Noel took part in a webchat for the website twec.com, below is a transcript. The website is no longer around - was part of the Trans World Global network which included radiowoodstock.com which did a live Oasis broadcast the same day.

Not since Queen had the world been so taken by a British band when Oasis demolished the Seattle scene with their 1994 debut Definitely Maybe. It was hard to escape Liam Gallagher & Co.’s one-band British Invasion which continued a year later with (What’s the Story) Morning Glory’s breakout singles "Wonderwall" and "Champagne Supernova." 1997’s Be Here Now was received well by fans, but critics it seemed had grown tired of the hype and even the band seemed displeased with the grueling recording process and its result. 2000 finds a the band selling out venues across Europe and North America, and celebrating the release of Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants. Whilst preparing for the start of their world tour in Japan, Noel Gallagher chatted with fans online on twec.com.

twec.com: twec.com would like to welcome Noel Gallagher of Oasis to today's chat! Hello Noel!

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Hello Cleveland!

dan huard: What songs did Noel initially play to get in the band?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I didn't play any songs, really...I was just jamming with the guys and they were writing their own material. After about a week, I started writing my own stuff. I can't really remember any of the songs that I first wrote when I was first in Oasis.

maccafreak: Noel, I was wondering if there is a chance that you are ever going to do "It’s Getting Better Man" acoustic?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I wasn't planning on it, no. I would always bow to overwhelming public demand, which I doubt there would be very much of.

maccafreak: Noel, I read recently that Burt Bacharach would like you work with you, any chance of that?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I would definitely consider it, because he is one of my all-time favorite songwriters. But these things have to be done at the right time. Since we're about to go on a world tour, it won't be anytime soon. But I'd love to, yeah.

squinty: Congrats on the #1 single in the UK! What's the plan for Oasis in 2000?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Well, we leave on Sunday to go to Japan. Then we finish the tour at Wembley Stadium in September. Between that, I haven't the faintest idea. Then we plan to take the rest of 2000 off and go into the studio in 2001 to record a new record.

dan huard: Will we ever see a Zeppelin cover as a B-Side?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Quite possibly, although I don't know which one. Maybe "Stairway to Heaven" would be nice. Or "Rock and Roll," that would be a good one. We used to play that before we went on stage. But who knows?

Sally: What kind of album would be a Noel solo album? Something like techno, electronic, dance?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: It would probably be very slow, with lots of psychedelic strings. Lots of electronic drum beats and lots of guitars. So by the sounds of things, it would be interesting.

logan357: How do you expect the gigs in the U.S. to go?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: We're coming in, I think it's March, we're going to America. Yeah, the beginning of April. The gigs are selling quite well, so hopefully we'll sell them all out. It should be a good package for all the Oasis fans, and a good night of good ol' British rock and roll.

Mijacogeo68: Noel, what'd you think of the NLC? We're just all curious as to what you think about your online fan club?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: The Internet is something that I am not very knowledgeable about, since I spend so much time playing the guitar. But anything that gathers Oasis fans, I'm all for it. I'd hope to spend more time to find out more about it in the future. I haven't really had a chance to check it out.

maccafreak: Noel, is there really a song called "Slow" that you wrote?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Yes. And it's very slow. And it will probably be on a solo record that I plan to do in the near future. Originally, it was written for Oasis, but I don't think it's an Oasis song. It's a bit too much of a ballad, really, which we're trying to get away from.

jeffrey: Noel, how many songs from the new album will be played live?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I think it's five. Five off the new record, a few off Be Here Now, and the rest off Morning Glory.

stefan: What do you think of Oasis MP3s and the exchange of bootlegs between fans?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: MP3s aren't something that I know a lot about, so I'd probably reserve my judgment until I found out more. I don't have a problem with bootlegs if it's something that's already been released. Different versions of songs that people know is fine by me. I mean, I am the Beatle Bootleg king! I've got so many that I don't even know where to start.

hysteria: What was the inspiration for "Where Did It All Go Wrong?"

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: It was just...it was inspired by certain situations that I've been in during the past two years. I was trying to articulate how I went from a working class guy in North England to being a celebrity, and not being very happy with that.

Lindsey7281: What bands are you listening to now?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Okay, there's a band from Los Angeles called the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. There's a band from Manchester called Proud Mary. Other than that, I've been making compilation tapes to take on tour. It's quite unusual for me to be in any American music, especially contemporary American music. The Americans must be getting it together over there! There's also a band called the Doves from Manchester that's pretty cool.

Asgeir: Noel, how many guitars do you have now?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I've just actually sold quite a few because they were taking up too much space in my house. I've only got six that I'm taking on tour. The rest I just collect because you have to spend your money on something.

Lisa: Your video for "All Around The World" was amazing. Are you considering working with Jonathan and Valerie again?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Not in the near future, no. We're working with Nick Egan at the moment because we feel, for this album, that he's the right man to do the video. If it was the right song and they were up for doing the video, then yeah.

OasisGurlie: Will you guys be going on the Jay Leno show when you’re here in LA?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I hope not.

benminton: Noel, will you be playing any songs from Definitely Maybe on this tour?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Absolutely! All of them! Yeah, we're going to be playing probably about four or five.

Liamzangel: How come you chose smaller venues for the American dates? Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love it! Right in front of my favorite band! Fucking awesome. -Enza, Boston MA USA

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: The reason that we choose smaller venues is because people choose not to buy as many records. It's simple math. You can only play to the people who want to see you. It's not a big climbdown for us - we'd play anywhere! We play stadiums in Europe, and in America, it's quite cool because we enjoy it just as much.

MagicPiAfterSavoyTru: Do you still posess the attitude, ‘If you're not in it to be as big as the Beatles, then it's just a hobby.’

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Well...that's not an attitude we have now, because in England we are as big as the Beatles. So that doesn't really apply to us now. I do believe that when you're a band, and you have the potential to be as big as the Beatles, you should pull out all the stops and go for it.

TheNatural: Noel, who do you think is the best guitarist of all time?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols, probably, because he doesn't play any minor chords, ever, on his record, which is a pretty awesome thing to be able to do. Other than that, you'd have to say Jimi Hendrix, wouldn't you? You know who was quite good, was Kurt Cobain.

TheNatural: Hey Noel, will you be signing bands to your new label?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I would like to in the future, but not in the near future because the Oasis thing is so massive that it takes up a lot of our time. Hopefully in the future, though.

lrjs19: Noel, what do you think of the press that the new album has received?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I haven't read any of the reviews because I promised myself that this time around I wasn't going to read the reviews so it wouldn't crowd my judgment when I was doing interviews. I believe they're quite mixed - people either like it or they don't. But reviews don't matter to me anymore. It's what the fans think. We just hope the fans that bought our records in 1994 buy our stuff now.

JorgeV: Do you use a specific brand of guitar?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: It's usually a Gibson, but I use a Fender as well. Brown ones, let's put it that way.

jandy16: What did you think of the Vh1 movie about John and Paul Called "The Two of Us?"

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I haven't seen it yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing it. Someone has a tape of it and they're going to play it for me.

dan: Noel, did you play a solo in VA with a nickel back in January of 1998 and lose the nickel while playing?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: It sounds like something that I could have done, but I don't remember, to be honest.

virginia: Noel, which bands influenced Standing On the Shoulder Of Giants?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I'm not really sure. To be influenced by groups, I don't know what that means. It's probably the Beatles, the Stones, the Who and the Sex Pistols. It always has been. But I don't sit down and listen toother people's records and make music. I make music based on how I feel.

stefan: What do you feel when you play live?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Terrified sometimes, yes. Although I'm very good at hiding it. Especially when it's my turn to sing. I feel nervous for the first two songs and then you click into auto-pilot and it's just like second nature. Yeah, nervous, really - especially these days.

jandy16: I have heard you are doing a VH1 Behind the Music, is that true?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: We've already done it. I don't know when it's going to be broadcast. We did it about six weeks ago. I'd imagine it would coincide with the tour.

Oh Way Sys: Will we ever hear Liam sing "Don't Look Back In Anger?"

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: No.

MagicPiAfterSavoyTru: Why was "Let's All Make Believe" not on the album?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Well, I wanted it as the opening track, but then as it got moved further down, it didn't seem to have the impact as it did when it was the first track. And then Liam insisted that "I Could See A Liar," the ninth track, be on the album, and the song just fell off. It's definitely one of my favorite songs that I've written, and it's a shame that it didn't make it, but never mind.

maccafreak: Noel, I saw you in Chicago last December - you blew everyone one away. Any chance you'll do "Helter Skelter" live again?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: No.

Esa: Are you going to do any other gigs than these which you have already published here in the Nordic countries?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I'm not really sure how many gigs we're playing or if they're the last ones that we're going to do. I'm not really the person to speak to about that. I just write the songs.

OASIS_FAN: How did you feel when the amp exploded during your last Mexican gig?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I felt like a rock god. Or a member of KISS.

Shakermaker77: Spin thought your new record was very passionate, and you guys were a more humble band now. Are you?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I'm a more humble songwriter, I'd have to say. As for Liam getting more humble, fucking don't think so.

Alex: Noel, even you say that Be Here Now wasn't good? It's fuckin' tops, man!

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Well, I reserve the right to criticize my own music. Sometimes I do become a little overcritical. It just brings back not very good memories in the studio. I know how good it should have been and that I should have worked on the lyrics now. I just think that some of the songs could have been a little better and it could have been a lot shorter.

Sally: Noel, what did you think of your visit to the pyramids in Teotihuacan?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Very, very, very, very spiritually uplifting. It was just fucking...wow. That's all I've got to say.

Oh Way Sys: Most of us turn to bootlegs ‘cause there are never any live concert CDs released to the public. Are you planning to release any live stuff?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Well, for this particular world tour that we're on, we just plan to record a really big percentage of the shows. We're planning to think of a live album sooner rather than later. We've got a solid band now.

jeffrey: Will you ever release the unplugged gig?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Again, it's a thing that's probably left best until the band has broken up, really. We're still doing new stuff and writing new records. I suppose if the music ever dries up, then maybe. From what I can remember, it didn't sound too bad.

Lisa: Are you planning on releasing any more concert videos like "Live By The Sea" and "There And Then?"

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I think that we're probably going to do a video for all the people who didn't make it. There was such a vast amount of footage being shot that it would probably take two years to go through the footage. We thought of making a video like Woodstock because it was such an important cultural event. But that's all for the future.

Shakermaker77: Noel, any new bands that you can see being huge in the future? There's all this talk of Stereophonics - what do you think of them?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: They're a good rock and roll band. Whether they'll go around the world and change people's lives, that remains to be seen. If I could predict that, I wouldn't be playing guitar for a living.

MagicPiAfterSavoyTru: How much longer do you think Oasis will carry the torch? We really need you because you are head and shoulders above everybody else.

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: For as long as we're writing music that we consider to be of a high standard, then we're always going to be around. We are the new Rolling Stones.

maccafreak: Any chance of a box set with the early demos and some other unreleased songs you have recorded?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I think sooner or later, there will be an anthology-type thing. There are lots of early demos and demos that we've done for the albums, and they're generally different versions because it's usually me singing and not Liam. It's anybody's guess, really.

Ben: Are there any bands you consider above Oasis except those who inspired you?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I think that when Oasis is not putting records out, there are a lot of really good bands. You're only as good as your last record, and unfortunately, I don't believe that our last record was very good. But I think that when people listen to the record...it's up to them to choose the best band, not me.

Shari: What's the most annoying thing about fans?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Well they don't buy enough records. All of them should buy four of each album. Some of them can get a bit too fanatical and crazy, and that can get scary, but generally they're pretty cool. It can be a bit intrusive sometimes, especially when they're constantly ringing on your doorbell all fucking day. But most of them are pretty cool.

Mijacogeo68: Are you enjoying fatherhood now?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Yes! It's been about three weeks now, so it's not been too edgy just yet. I'm going on a world tour now, so I'm getting out of my fatherly duties for most of a year. But from what I've experienced, yeah. It's different, that's for sure.

virginia: How do you describe, in one word, SOTSOG?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Number Four. Or fourth.

logan357: What kind of guitar pedals do you use?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I've got a Jimton Whatwiler pedal, I've got an Ibanez tube screener, I've got a Boss digital delay and I've got something called an Echodrive, but I don't know who it's made by. They're all very silver and very heavy, and they all make shitloads of noise.

Ben: How will you react to Robbie's 'gift?'

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Oh, I don't know, I'll probably just ignore it.

OasisGurlie: Did you know that the dude that stabbed George Harrison was obsessed with Oasis as well and that could've been you my poor baby Noely

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Well yeah, I heard those rumors, but I would have just called Batman on the Bat Phone.

GallyLuvr: What’s the craziest thing a fan has ever done at one of your shows?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Not clapped.

Liam Page: When is the new single coming out?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I think we've got a single out in England in about three or four weeks. That's as much as I know.

MIke: Would you guys ever do a Beatles cover record?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Some say we already have.

jeffrey: Any chance of you covering a Queen song?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Trying to get Liam to get into character as Freddy Mercury would probably get too difficult.

manchester: What is the song "Up in the Sky" about?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Nothing. I mean, it all depends...that particular album depends on the listener. It means what you want it to mean. I'm sure certain lines have specific meanings, but unless I had the lyric sheet in front of me I couldn't tell you. Probably something to do with birds. Flying.

benminton: Which Oasis album is your personal favorite?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Definitely Maybe. Just because it was the first record we released, and it was the first one I wrote, and it was the one that made us famous, and the most consistent album we've ever done. It's got the best bunch of singles on it.

dan huard: You've mentioned that you have material written for the NEXT album. How is that coming along? What is the sound like?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Well I've got five songs written. Three of them are not Oasis songs, I'll probably just keep them in the bank. Two of them are definitely Oasis songs, and they're definitely rocking. I'm pleased with them. I played them for the band and everyone was tapping their feet. Good sign.

Sharlene: Noel, whenever you have a new single or a new album out, I always buy it the day it comes out, when the store opens, and buy it. Have you ever loved a band so much that you did the same?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Yeah. And I remember being in the queue to buy the Smith's new album and the Stone Roses' new album and Achtung Baby by U2.

lrjs19: Noel, how does the money affect your outlook on life?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: It makes you lazy. But it means that every time you go into a recording studio or on tour, you're not doing it for the money - you're doing it for other reasons, usually musical. So rest assured that we don't do anything for money anymore, apart from festivals.

Oh Way Sys: Some of your songs have some acoustic guitar that you don't use in concerts. Why?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: We've always tried to incorporate the acoustic guitar in the live sound, but it doesn't seem to happen for us. When we get to the point where'd put in an acoustic guitar, we think, ‘Well, the Stones wouldn't have done it, so we're not going to do it.’

Mijacogeo68: What do you enjoy most about the U.S. while you are here?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Sometimes the weather is nice, when it's hot. And you do meet some really cool people out there. And, you know, the list of things that I enjoy about America is very long and very boring and very personal, as is the list of things I don't enjoy. I love it and hate it as much as I do every country I've ever been to. I like buying guitars in America, and jeans and denim jackets and sunglasses. I haven't progressed to the cowboy boots and the horse, but I'm getting there.

Sally can wait: What’s the best gift you have ever received?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: A 1976 chocolate brown Rolls Royce from Alan McGee for Christmas in 1995. And of course the other one was my baby daughter, who was born three weeks ago. Her name is Anais. She's named after French writer Anais Nin. My wife tells me she wrote erotic novels.

one_i_blind: What's your favorite song to play in concert?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: At the moment, my favorite song is "Gas Panic," off the new record. And we'll be doing a cover version of "My Generation," which is pretty good. I also like doing "Some Might Say" and "Rock and Roll Star."

logan357: Do you find it easier to write slower acoustic songs or faster paced electric ones?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I find it easier to write slower acoustic songs, which is a pain in the ass for someone who's in a rock and roll band. Some of the stuff that I've been writing lately is quite full of the electric. As you get older, you tend to get slower, don't you?

Pacer: What is your favorite Beatles album?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I have two. The first one is the Red One, the greatest hits from 1962-1966. The second one is the Blue One, which is the greatest hits from 1967-1970.

Shakermaker77: Would you rather sing more, or let Liam take up that slack?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I'd rather sing less, to be honest. But Liam needs a bit of a break during touring because he sings so fucking loud. I'd like to sing less, but I'll probably end up singing more, unfortunately.

Alejandro: What song will be the opener on the tour?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: "Fucking in the Bushes."

jandy16: How did you feel after the 1996 US MTV awards with Liam's antics?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I just felt depressed and fed up and I just wanted to go home.

Anka: Do you listen to bands writing in languages besides English?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Well, considering that I don't understand any of the languages besides English, that would be difficult.

Galli: How many hours do you spend writing?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I'm not too sure, I don't know. I don't devote any set time to it. I pick up the guitar when I feel like it and if anything's happening I spend time developing ideas. Some days I can write for ten hours and some days I can write for five minutes. It all depends.

JadedOasisGurly: Compare your writing style from say 7 years ago, to the present - any major changes or differences?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I think in the early days, my writing style was quite punky. But now it's gotten quite folky. You'd have to ask the fans about that. I'm not really the best person to ask about that. The obvious answer would be to say that yeah, I'm a better songwriter now than I was 7 years ago. But that's not for me to say.

lrjs19: Noel, I have a poster of you and Liam that I got from Knebworth, and on your hand it says ‘Beatles 67-70’ - what's that all about?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: I think that was done for the Christmas issue of the Melody Maker, and they asked us what our favorite album of all-time was. I just wrote it on my hand. I was trying to be interesting.

Alejandro: What´s your favorite SOTSOG song? My favorite is "Where Did it All Go Wrong!"

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: My favorite song is "Roll It Over" or "Gas Panic."

twec.com: twec.com would like to thank the Noel for stopping by today and chatting with us. Any last words for all of your fans before you leave?

OASIS – Noel Gallagher: Good-bye Cleveland. Well, you know, we'll be passing through your town within the next nine months! So feel free to drop by and say hello.

twec.com: Special thanks to RadioWoodstock.com for the Live Oasis broadcast today and thanks to all of the great Oasis fans who stopped by today!
