Equipment: Sony TCD-D100 DAT Recorder + Reactive Sound Spider condenser microphones
I set my microphones up on a fire escape outside the Colosseum window. I used a Sony TCD-D100 DAT recorder and Reactive Sound Spider condenser microphones, a combination I'd used inside other venues many times with excellent results. The sound this time was terrible, but I cleaned it up with EQ as best I could.

Here it is. It surely takes the prize for the worst ever Oasis concert recording, indeed, it must be the worst recording of any band in the history of amateur concert taping! Strangely, the organ is the only instrument that can be heard reasonably clearly. The songs themselves are just about discernible; the recording's only unique quality is that it captures the whole show. You can hear occasional chatter from the bouncers and road crew who were outside the venue much more clearly than what was going on inside. I grabbed a screenshot of the venue from Google Earth and created a picture showing my two recording locations, which hard-core collectors might find interesting.

There are at least three versions in circulation of the same source: possibly among the worst quality recordings I've heard. It's like it was recorded on a low spec dictaphone by someone standing by the speakers. Still, it's the only known source to surface to date. (Unfortunately it's also incomplete, as the encore is missing.)

2026 Update #1: Incredibly the taper of this show got in touch earlier this year to let me know the background of this recording. In his own words: "Your description of the recording quality is spot-on; it's truly awful, but I thought you might be interested in the story behind it...".

It turns out he didn't have a ticket for the show and so he set up microphones on a fire escape between Watford Town Hall and the Colosseum(!)

"I used a Sony TCD-D100 DAT recorder and Reactive Sound Spider condenser microphones, a combination I'd used inside other venues many times with excellent results. The sound this time was terrible, but I cleaned it up with EQ as best I could. It's not the only recording of the show though. I also put a Sony D8 DAT recorder in the bike shed at the side of the venue and left it recording while I was up on the fire escape. Now, if you think the circulating recording is bad, you should hear this one; it's a hundred times worse!"

2026 Update #2: Finally got to hear the "Isaac McHelicopter" Fire Escape and infamous Bike Shed sources from the taper himself... Turns out they are completely different sources to the existing one circulating, and both contain the encore missing from the main source! Like the taper himself says, the "Bike Shed" source is hilariously poor given the random location (you can hear when the back doors to the venue open and close as the volume jumps noticeably), but as of 2026 it's still the ONLY complete source ever to have surfaced from this gig. The map with the taping locations is amazing too, surely this must be one of the most elaborate sets of recordings to have been made?
