Release Notes
Oasis had established themselves as the most popular Western music artists in Japan. They visited Japan three years in a row from 2000 to 2002, and since 2002, they have been coming to Japan twice a year. Speaking of their visit to Japan that year, they held a large-scale Japan tour from September to October, and released the CDs "YOYOGI 2002 1ST NIGHT: DAT MASTER", "YOYOGI 2002 FINAL NIGHT", and the high-quality sound source "TOKYO 2002 2ND NIGHT". However, their first visit to Japan in 2002 was in May, when they performed a one-night gig at an event held in Tokyo. What's more, their new album "HEATHEN CHEMISTRY" had not yet been released at the time. This event was filmed by a cable TV station, and the entire Oasis stage was broadcast. Since there were other performers at the event and the performance time was less than 45 minutes, they were given the honor of broadcasting all the songs. More than half of the repertoire performed here was from the soon-to-be-released "HEATHEN CHEMISTRY" album, and since the broadcast was after the album's release, it seems that the set list was even more aggressive with the new songs. However, some of the songs on the album had a 21st century-like happening where rough mixes were leaked via the Internet before the release, and the scene where Noel made a suspicious comment to the Japanese audience who responded well to the new songs ("How do you know?") also reflected the circumstances at the time. Even so, by focusing on the new songs, the performance content played a wonderful role as a trailer for this year, even though the stage was less than 45 minutes long. In addition, since the tour had not yet started in earnest, for example, Liam's singing voice sounds a little higher in "Hung In A Bad Place" compared to the later live version, which is refreshing now. Also, unlike the vast venues of arenas and outdoor festivals, this event was held in a venue that was a little larger, more like a live house, so you can see that they were performing in a much more relaxed atmosphere than they did in the main tour. When Liam almost made a mistake in the lyrics of the new arrangement of "Some Might Say," which was also a representative repertoire of this tour, Noel smiled at him, which was probably due to the relaxed atmosphere that was different from the main tour. The facial expressions of that happy scene are clearly conveyed thanks to the excellent quality of the video. The quality is very high, and it is so clear that it is comparable to the current eyes even after almost 20 years since the broadcast. And yet, the atmosphere of the live performance is completely different from that of the Yoyogi in September (the same station aired it at that time), which was recorded as part of the main tour, so it would be interesting to compare it with the first delivery DVD-R "THE VIDEO" of the well-received "YOYOGI 2002 FINAL NIGHT". The bonus footage is an excerpt of Oasis footage from the limited edition documentary DVD of the event. It is reminiscent of the time, with a heartwarming photo taken in the dressing room with rapper Jay-Z, who also appeared at the event. The footage also shows Oasis arriving at the venue and the atmosphere in the dressing room, which is very relaxing, and it is surely why they were able to perform such a harmonious performance. The first gig in Japan in 2002, which seems to have been forgotten compared to the Yoyogi gig in September, is recorded with perfect picture and sound quality (clearer than what you can see on YouTube, of course!).
comments
There are several audience-sourced versions of this show around - the new source on As Soon As They Come is the best quality so far. The DVD sources are basically all the same quality, the local ads on the uncut version are interesting.
The Super Live Tokyo 2002 DVD released by "Uxbridge" in 2021 also includes a short (3 min) backstage documentary.
