Release Notes
ULTIMATE SOUND
Remaster & Remix of Stereo Audience Recording

At last, a live recording of unbelievably superb sound quality and performance — one that has never been released anywhere before — is finally making its debut! This is literally an ULTIMATE new standard recording that blows a hole through the accepted view of the Heathen Chemistry tour. This really is something special!

When you look at the 2002 Heathen Chemistry tour, it might seem at first glance that it has been well served by releases: the famous Finsbury Park performances, Complete Witness Festival 2002, and the series of Japanese shows, for example. But in terms of “great performance / great recording,” there has actually been a glaring gap: the August US tour.

So much time has passed that some people might even wonder, “Did Oasis really tour America properly in 2002?”

The 2002 US tour was troubled from the very beginning. On the opening night in Pompano Beach, Florida, Liam was in poor condition and gave up early in the show — although, unusually, he did actually explain onstage that his throat was not in good shape before leaving. That show was captured on the nostalgic Flashbulb label release Noel Sings When Liam’s Down. Apart from that, live recordings from this period have basically never been released, and even now the reality of the American leg of the Heathen Chemistry tour has remained difficult to grasp.

On top of that, as the tour continued, Noel and Andy were involved in a traffic accident on a travel day. Noel in particular suffered facial bruising, and as a result three shows had to be cancelled. With all these circumstances combined, the 2002 American tour has remained an extremely underrepresented period in terms of available recordings.

But now, not only does this release shine a light on that missing-piece period, it gives us one of the finest recordings from the whole of 2002. The show is Atlanta, August 5th — and it is astonishing that this has never previously been released on CD, because the audience recording is absolutely first-rate.

The clarity is superb. The recording condition is so good that it could almost have been issued as a pressed CD as it was. Given how few items exist from the August US tour, there can hardly be another source from this period more worthy of release.

To make the most of this excellent audience recording, our shop has once again used the latest AI technology to separate the master source into a total of 12 tracks: kick drum, toms, snare, hi-hat, ride cymbal, crash cymbal, audience noise, guitar, bass, vocals, piano, and others. Each track was then remastered individually before being remixed.

That said, because the original sound quality was already so good, it did not actually require heavy-handed work. Even so, the result has evolved into an even clearer, wider, and easier-to-listen-to sound.

One note: during the first song, “Hello,” there are two brief moments in the second half where the sound texture changes slightly, plus one very brief skip. Both issues are present on the original master source. The reason for the skip is unknown, but the brief sound changes are probably because the excitement of the front-row audience interfered with the taper’s recording. Thankfully, both issues are only momentary.

As already mentioned, the Atlanta recording is genuinely excellent. For example, the moment “Hung in a Bad Place” begins has tremendous power, now sharpened and clarified beyond the original source. As that moment proves, the clarity of this recording and the modern AI remaster/remix are particularly well suited to the Heathen Chemistry material. “Force of Nature,” for instance, has gained noticeably in both power and clarity.

“Born on a Different Cloud” is especially impressive. Alan’s detailed drum patterns and tom fills are clearer than on the original source, and the interplay between Noel’s extended guitar solo and Alan’s drumming in the latter half of the song is so superb that it can be called one of the highlights of the day.

Liam’s voice, too, had recovered splendidly from the poor condition he was in at Pompano Beach, and this recording captures him in excellent form with wonderful clarity. His emotional singing on “Stop Crying Your Heart Out,” and his fully revived performance on the finale “My Generation,” both come across vividly. The remaster/remix adds a further synergistic effect, allowing that performance to be enjoyed in the clearest possible sound.

Liam’s condition at this Atlanta show is undoubtedly a major counterexample to the negative image that has traditionally surrounded the American leg of the Heathen Chemistry tour.

Another 2002 highlight, Noel’s vocal version of “She’s Electric,” is also captured in outstanding sound, with the charm of the performance centred around Noel’s singing shining through beautifully. Just hearing these tracks is enough to make you wonder why the Atlanta show had never been released before — the sound quality and the strength of the performance are that overwhelming.

After the live performance ends, the audience joins in a huge singalong to “Wonderwall” playing over the venue speakers — and it is included in full. The scale of that singalong feels very American and quite spectacular. It also makes clear that the band were not the only reason this was such a great show; the passionate audience played a huge part too.

However, just when it might have seemed that the American tour had found its momentum with this show, the traffic accident mentioned earlier occurred, leading to several cancellations. It really was a tour plagued by misfortune.

Even so, this release does not merely fill in a missing piece from a neglected period. It is a groundbreaking first CD release of a recording with both superb sound quality and superb performance content. An astonishing, top-class source is finally here.

A new must-have recording from the Heathen Chemistry tour.
