Release Notes
Another Oasis this week is Kinney Master, which has been a long time coming! It was provided on the first day of their 2002 Japan tour in Yoyogi. Speaking of Yoyogi in 2002, the UXBRIDGE label's CD-R "TOKYO 2002 2ND NIGHT" is now on sale, but while that was the second day of the same Yoyogi tour on September 26th, this is the first day. This day was announced as an additional performance, and was set as the first day of the 2002 Japan tour.
All of the Tokyo leg of the 2002 tour was held in Yoyogi, and due to the acoustics of this venue, the audience recordings often have a sense of echo and distance to a greater or lesser extent. The previous "TOKYO 2002 2ND NIGHT" was exactly like that, but it was well received due to its very mild listening experience. The original sound source provided by Kinney this time also has the sense of distance and echo that is unique to Yoyogi, but the sound image is closer than "TOKYO 2002~". In particular, the contours of Liam and Noel's vocals are clear, and the sound image is not blurred by echo, including the performance, which is a major point.
On this day, the title "THAT SHINES ON" was released in real time from the SYLPH label, but compared to the audience recording used there, there is less echo, and the vocal contours are sharper as mentioned above, making this sound source overwhelmingly easier to listen to. And yet, there is no excessive capture of the excitement around you, and there are no problems such as noise, so the clarity throughout the whole thing is even easier to hear.
In addition, the 2002 Japan tour was a time when speed releases using CD-Rs were at their peak, so there were no pressed CD items at all. It is still fresh in my memory that the soundboard recording of the final day of Yoyogi, when the pro shot video was later distributed, was finally released as a "CHAMPAGNE GOLD" press CD by MOONCHILD last year, but when it came to the audience recording, there were no press CD items at all.
It is well known that the soundboard on the final day of Yoyogi had a tendency to have a peculiar mixing balance, and the value of the audience recording that captured the sound heard from the stage on that day has not faded. It's been almost 20 years since that visit to Japan, but finally a groundbreaking release that recorded a high-quality audience on a press CD will be realized.
At the time of release, the thin tone of the sound coming from the venue, which is noticeable immediately after the start of the live, is alleviated by equalization. After all, it is the first day of the tour, so this phenomenon is unavoidable, but it was corrected to a level that was not excessive.
This day was the first day of the 2002 Japan tour, so the careful performance looks very fresh when you listen to it now. It is said that the best day of this tour was the second day in Osaka (October 3rd), but compared to the relaxed singing there, Liam's careful singing is better. Also, as was reported at the time, on this day, there was a monitor problem that caused feedback, and it even escalated to the point where Liam's microphone had to be replaced, but perhaps that is why he was trying to sing carefully so as not to be out of sync with the performance.
As mentioned at the time of the release of "TOKYO 2002 2ND NIGHT", Noel's "She's Electric" was only performed on the first two days of the Yoyogi concert in Japan because he was tired of it. Given such a short-lived treatment, the first day seems to have been better. However, Noel also had a stumble that was typical of the first day, and when the programmed rhythm of the encore "Force Of Nature" began, he started the familiar count every time, but missed the timing, and it was a heartwarming sight to see him count again. After this song, the perfect timing of the shout of "Rock and Roll!" is also something else...lol
Then Liam appears again for the final two songs, and his high-tension singing, as if expressing the joy of completing the first day's stage, is a masterpiece when you hear it again.
It's certainly not an audience recording with a sound image that is called "like a sound board", but Kinney provided a sound source that is extremely comfortable to listen to. And above all, with the first press CD release in the history of the 2002 Japan performance audience, you can enjoy the first day of the Japan performance to your heart's content, which is already nostalgic (including "Wonderwall" played as background music after the live performance and the announcement of the return).
Liam the Mod is a superior source than That Shines On.
Wondermall contains a handful of bonus tracks from Sept 29th: "Wonderwall" (from Yoyogi Taiikukan, Tokyo live show) and "Wonderwall (acoustic)" / "Whatever (acoustic)" and "Don't Look Back in Anger (acoustic) from the J-WAVE Radio session.
