Release Notes
The masterpiece "TOKYO 2002" released by the nostalgic MASTERPORT label has been re-released for the first time in a long time! The 2002 live tour with the album "HEATHEN CHEMISTRY" was the beginning of the second peak period, and the excitement at that time was considerable. In addition, Oasis at that time had firmly established their position as the most popular Western music band in Japan, and in that year they had become such a big presence that they came to Japan twice in one year, with a short stay in Japan for an event live in early spring and another tour in autumn. In addition, this Japan tour was also the era when the speed release unique to CD-R was at its peak, and in fact this tour was released on CD-R by all labels. "TOKYO 2002" was exactly such a piece, and it contains the show on September 26th, the beginning of the Japan tour. Since its release, this title has been highly praised by specialist magazines and fans for "faithfully experiencing the atmosphere of the live performance." The secret to such high praise is that, although the sound image is a little distant, it does not pick up any of the clapping or choruses that are common in Oasis live recordings, and the recording quality is perfect for listening carefully.
It is true that Alan White's bass drum does sound a bit loud when listening to it now, but this is the result of the combination of the sound of his drumming and the acoustics unique to the gymnasium, and it is said that this is also one of the reasons why the "live atmosphere can be faithfully experienced." And yet, from around "Columbia," the sound image starts to rise, and what was already easy to hear becomes even easier to hear. With Oasis audience recordings, if the performance is captured up close, the dilemma of picking up a lot of surrounding sounds tends to arise, but this exquisite recording balance and sound quality have certainly not faded.
As for the performance, the songs from the album that we will probably never hear live again, such as "Hung in a Bad Place", "Born on a Different Cloud", and above all, "Stop Crying Your Heart Out", the greatest song of "HEATHEN CHEMISTRY", looked amazing on stage. This is the stage of 2002. Now that almost 20 years have passed, it is often the first three albums that are looked back on when it comes to Oasis albums, but "HEATHEN CHEMISTRY" has been highly praised since its release and is still loved by enthusiasts. The powerful performance of those songs is also captured nicely.
Speaking of 2002, "She's Electric", which was included in the masterpiece "MORNING GLORY" but had never been performed live until then (although unlike the album, Noel sang it), was also performed, which is a song that will make enthusiasts cry, and is worth mentioning as a selection that will make enthusiasts cry. What's more, this song was stopped being performed during the Japan tour because Noel "got tired of it," so it was a rare repertoire that was only heard at the beginning of a tour.
And it also includes a cover of The Who's "My Generation," which took the spot as the closing number, and "Some Might Say," which made a long-awaited comeback to the repertoire with a lowered key arrangement for Liam, vacuum-packing moments that truly epitomized 2002. For fans of the time, this is a perfect release to re-buy, and for the generation that became fans after watching the movie "SUPERSONIC," it's a great sampler to enjoy Oasis' Japan tours since then, as this nostalgic classic that can be recommended to a wide range of fans has been reborn!
Brothers On This, Soul Won't Drown and Tokyo 2002 are all different audience sources. "johnky's" I Wanna Be a Better Man uses the same source as Soul Won't Drown.
Uxbridge's release Tokyo 2002 Second Night (Uxbridge 1468) in 2020 seems to be a direct clone of the earlier Masterport audience source.
