Radio 2 Documentary presented by Mark Radcliffe

"Many bands define their decade. The Beatles in the 60s, The Sex Pistols in the 70s, The Smiths in the 80s - it's inconceivable that these bands could have arisen in any other time, so perfectly did they reflect the cultural landscape of their day. So, as the 90s rode into view over the ashes of Thatcherism with the hedonist legacy of rave culture and the roots of the New Lad movement as baggage, Oasis made perfect sense."

"Throughout the mid-90s Oasis reigned supreme. It was success on a scale not enjoyed by a British rock band in years. Their 1996 gig at Knebworth was one of the largest outdoor concerts ever staged in the UK. The same year they won 3 Brit Awards. What's the Story (Morning Glory) was the biggest selling British album of the decade. Crucially for their success, Oasis took rock music out of the pages of the music press and onto the front of the tabloids. Bad behaviour was back in fashion, and few behaved quite as badly as Liam Gallagher did. Fuelled by monumental self-belief and (lest we forget) some of the catchiest rock songs in living memory, Oasis couldn't fail."

"This two part documentary follows the band from their early days in Manchester to their present status as Britain's premier rock and roll band. The origins of the band are well documented - big brother Noel taking over his little brother's band - as are the circumstances which led to them signing with Alan McGee's Creation Records in 1993 following a gig at Glasgow's King Tut's Wah Wah Hut."

"The programmes also feature interviews with Noel, Liam, Andy Bell and Gem Archer, as well as interviews with Paul Weller, Richard Ashcroft, and Travis. We also hear from manager Marcus Russell, Steve Lamacq, Paolo Hewitt and Tim Abbot of Creation Records."

Presenter Mark Radcliffe says:
"Living and working in Manchester, and being a Man. City fan Oasis have provided a regular soundtrack over the past ten years. Somehow Noel just seems to have a knack of writing songs that have become huge anthems without ever getting remotely pompous. Part of this is down to the voice of his kid brother Liam who I really believe to be one of the top ten rock vocalists ever to come out of Britain. Again, he manages to communicate raw emotion, anger, vulnerability without having to try. It all just seems so effortless and their sound has been all the more majestic for that."
As for Noel, he had this to say about Radio 2 doing a documentary on Oasis...
"I done one about 6 months ago for The Jam so if we're in the same league as them then that'll do me. We must be a part of the fabric of youth culture - I think it's great".
